KATHMANDU
Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and also the name of the fertile valley that surrounds the city. It is located in the center of Nepal, 90 km from the border with India. The city center, around Durbar Square, is a labyrinth of narrow streets, houses with wooden balconies, markets and Hindu and Buddhist temples. On the outskirts of Kathmandu there are modern European-style buildings, such as the Royal Palace, with more than 1,700 rooms, built at the beginning of the 20th century. On a hill overlooking the city is the Swayambhu Buddhist temple and monastery, on whose terraces monks roam. The temple is crowned by a sanctuary whose four walls have a huge eye painted, symbolizing the watchful wisdom of Buddha.
The minimum stay of 3 nights allows us to take the visitor to the three great medieval cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, and includes visits to the great temples of Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Bodhnath among other visits.
PATAN
Patan is located on a plateau that extends over the Bagmati River, south of Kathmandu. Famous as a center of fine arts and for the superb work of its artisans, Patan is also known as Lalitpur, "the beautiful city." It is essentially a Buddhist town, which is said to have been founded in the 3rd century BC by Emperor Ashoka, although there is no historical record of this. The inscriptions that have been discovered reveal that Patn was an important metropolis from very ancient times. Mangal Bazaar, an area adjacent to Durbar Square, may have been the site of King Manadeva's palace in the 5th century. The great period of construction of the city took place under the Mallas, during the 16th to 18th centuries. Most of the monuments that remain today were erected or rebuilt at that time. With no less than 136 monasteries, and 55 major temples, Patan is truly the center of the arts and architecture of the valley, a great center of the Newari Buddhist religion and traditional crafts. The Durbar Square of Patn is considered one of the most beautiful urban complexes in the world and is part of the list of World Heritage Sites UNESCO.
BHAKTAPUR
Bhaktapur is an ancient Newar town in the eastern part of the Kathmandu Valley. It is the third largest city in this valley and was once the capital of Nepal during the great Malla Kingdom until the second half of the 15th century. Until the 16th century the city dominated politically and economically all of Nepal. After the Gorka conquest in 1769, the city closed in on itself, maintaining both economic and political autarky and independence.
Bhaktapur is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its rich culture, temples, as well as works in wood, metal and stone.
DHULIKHEL
The town of Dhulikhel is located near the highway that connects Kathmandu with the Tibetan border city of Kodari.
Dhulikhel has for many centuries been an important trading center on the ancient trade route linking Nepal and Tibet. Since time immemorial, people from Nepal traveled to Tibet to bring home salt and gold.
Nowadays tourists come to Dhulikhel attracted by the mountains. Those spectacular snow-capped mountains seen from Dhulikhel offer some of the best panoramic views in the world. When a blue haze covers the lower part of the mountains, the mountains appear to be floating in the air. When the snow-capped mountains are in the background, Dhulikhel is undoubtedly a paradise for nature lovers, accompanied by the beauty of the surrounding cultivated terraces.
NAGARKOT
The town of Nagarkot is located about 32 kilometers east of Kathmandu and has a population of about 4,500 inhabitants. At an altitude of 2,195 meters above sea level, Nagarkot is considered one of the most picturesque places in Bhaktapur district, and is a well-known tourist destination for travelers. This place is famous for the views of sunrises in the mountains, including Mount Everest as well as other snow-capped peaks of the Eastern Himalayan range of Nepal. Furthermore, Nagarkot offers a good panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley.
DAKSHINKALI
The rich fabric of Nepal's cultural and artistic heritage is summarized in the Kathmandu Valley, which has been the capital since its mythical origins, starting from a sacred lake that was drained by the god Manjushri. Successive dynasties have left their traces in the impressive palaces and carved temples, which are found throughout the valley. People from all over the country swarm the bustling streets of the bazaar, offering a bewildering ethnic diversity. The honking of motorcars, the increase in traffic and the uncontrolled urbanism that the modern metropolis suffers contrast with the old brick enclosures.
CHITWAN
Royal Chitwan National Park is considered one of the richest wildlife habitats in Asia and boasts the last remaining large areas of tall grass savanna. It was a hunting reserve of the ruling Rana family, always good sportsmen, where every few years they organized a big hunt during the winter months, when the threat of fever was minimal. The Chitwan Valley is a dune that lies between the Siwalik (Churia) and Mahabharat mountain ranges. It is watered by two main rivers, the Narayani and the Rapti. Before the 1950s, Chitwan was sparsely populated, dominated by Tharu tribes, who appear to have developed good resistance to endemic malaria. After the eradication of this disease, Chitwan was cleared and cultivated and tripled its population in less than a decade. Poaching became a big problem; The rhinoceros, in particular, was persecuted for its valuable horns. In 1964 it received sanctuary status and many residents were evicted. Rhino numbers declined to a record low of less than 100 in the 1960s.
POKHRA
The picturesque town of Pohkara in Nepal on the banks of Fewa Lake is the starting point of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, Pohkara is a beautiful place frequented by visitors who go to the Himalayas for trekking or mountaineering. The city, also called the Switzerland of Nepal, offers wonderful lakes, canyons and waterfalls, caves, historical places and museums to visit, as well as temples, colorful festivals and cheap shopping opportunities.
LUMBINISidharta Gautama, Buddha, was born in 623 BC in the famous Lumbini Gardens, which soon became a pilgrimage site. An illustrious pilgrim, the Indian emperor Asoka, ordered one of his commemorative pillars to be erected there. Today, this site continues to be a pilgrimage center, in which the archaeological remains linked to the birth of Buddha and the beginnings of Buddhism constitute one of its main centers of interest. It is located 21 km west of the modern city of Bhairawa, formerly known as Siddharthanagar, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Important place of pilgrimage, for Buddhists as well as for Hindus. Lumbini was lost for centuries. In the 4th century AD, the Chinese monk Fa-Hien traveled to India in search of Buddhist manuscripts and returned with graphic descriptions of the remains that Lumbini found.
